Strangely, there is a paradox in this kind of topical anthology. The underlying theme is assuming that human kind has reached peak oil and that due to our unfailing thirst for dinosaur bones, society inevitably collapses as the oil runs out. Apparently there is no alternative to a carbon fuel based society as all of these stories paint a pretty bleak picture of pretty primitive cultures a thousand years out.It would be interesting if an author depicted a technologically and socially advanced society that was only able to blossom because it was no longer bound by a carbon energy based economy. I did not get through the entire book, so there may be a hidden gem, but reading front to back I found myself tiring of the cliches of various retrograded groups of humans sailing, walking, and clutching bits of old technology.

These twelve stories offer a tantalising taste of possible futures and offer some really compelling storytelling. I've oftern found myself delighted by the creative and origanal details in the stories and the boundless creativity of the twelve authors. Many people think that after the age of oil is over we'll be bound to live in a state of hopelessness and decline but this collection shows a vibrant, thriving human race living in rich and vairied cultures, who use their adaptability to survive and even thrive, to a greater or lesser extent (no spoilers).
