I usually don't read short stories but this is one we read for a Book Club recently. The author was invited to discuss the book. She is delightful, very articulate, and very interesting. The book is very well written and the stories give us an insight into the "middle" class of India. Additionally, the short stories wove a spell on me and also connected to each other in odd ways. So it was more a novel than a bunch of unrelated stories. I know you will not be disappointed in the content of this book.

Kismetwali and Other Stories edition by Reetika Khanna Nijhawan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved the book and found it very hard to put down. In eight short stories filled with suspense, Reetika brings to life the interactions between those better-off in Indian society and those that have been fated to serve them. As she compellingly illustrates, money and wealth do not guarantee moral superiority, and the hardworking poor are not lacking in values and agency. While the stories are firmly grounded in today’s India, their lessons are universal and will attract readers from around the world.
This book is a treasure for the soul. It is an intricately woven collection of vignettes set in modern day India implicating the true and universal connection we all share regardless of our current, very fleeting, impertinent set of circumstances. Each and every story is colorful and engaging and you will be drawn in as you learn more about the characters with every turn of the page.
I so enjoyed this collection of stories about working class people in modern India and their relationships with the upper class who employ them. The author set a mood and scene which made me feel that I was really getting a taste of the culture, and yet she made the characters so real and full of emotions, humor and surprises that I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what came next. It would be hard to choose a favorite story in the book. I find myself thinking about the characters and wishing for a sequel!
Reetika's stories, set in India, are a wonderful combination of creating characters with universal traits of the human soul and of capturing the essence and intricacy of India's multifaceted society. Having spent time in India from the mid 1970's to mid 1980's during my formative years of coming into adulthood, these stories brought back such wonderful memories of the land, but more importantly, I felt the authenticity of the stories. Through the relationship of Reetika's characters, each story had a poignancy of emotion that was touching but not maudlin. Not only did I personally enjoy these stories, but so did our book group of 18 members.
Reading Kismetwali and Other Stories was a delight. It was a delight because, it connected, it humanized, and it had stickiness. Set in India, this collection of stories reflects the lives of folks falling under distinct socio-economic strata who are linked with each other through simple daily chores, such as grooming (shave-wala), brooming (safai-wali), zooming (taxi-wala) and blooming (phool-wali).
This linkage between the folks creates the connection, the honesty in the writing creates the humanization, and the simplicity in the narration creates the stickiness. The result Reetika’s first book remains with oneself long after the read. I am looking forward to her next piece.
An absolute fantastic must read! The details in the book walk me down memory lane and reminds of days past! I have not lived in India for almost 25 years but the book helped me smell the pungent air of Mumbai, taste the food on the streets and ignite feelings that were long forgotten! Kudos to the author....! Can't wait for another book by her
Finally short stories set in contemporary India that have the perfect combo of just enough detail to get into the minds of the character, interesting scenarios and a little twist ending. Nothing sad or depressing as modern Indian short stories like to be, and instead there is a sense of uplift through all the complexity that weaves in the everyday lives of the characters. Love the 'wala-wali' concept since the stories kind of flow in and out of each other this way despite each story being a standalone gem. The writing is intelligent and interesting, and even when one story ended, I was glad there was a fresh one waiting - so definitely didn't want this book to end. Did I mention the twist endings? Definitely reminded me of the same deliciousness of Guy de Maupassant's short story classics I read as a kid. Definitely get it and this week's reading is sorted.
